In Him Was Life

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. “John 1:4-5 ESV

I’ve always loved John 1, but since the first of last year the above text from John 1:4-5 has haunted me wherever I go.

See people often crowded the streets to see Jesus, they pushed through crowds to touch him, they stormed into dinner parties to anoint him. People were curious to meet this man who was full of mercy, forgiveness and love.

I often wonder what it will be like to met Christ face to face. This man who is rich in mercy and grace, abounding in love. It will probably be an overwhelming feeling to fully understand and experience the truth of Romans 8:1:“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

I Want His Presence

When I drive around my city I constantly hear John 1 ringing in my ears and my prayer is always “Lord I don’t want to be a person with all the right answers, but a person of your presence.”

When I say I want to be a person of his presence, I mean that I want the life of Christ to be evident in my life. I want his compassion, his mercy, his forgiveness to flow out of me. I want the light of the Gospel to shine out of my life so that it pushes back darkness.

I know at one time in my christian walk I was content with having just the right answers, but the longer I live I understand more what Paul means in 1 Corinthians 13 that we can know all mysteries but if we don’t have love we are nothing!

I love to learn God’s word and hope to always communicate it correctly, but I don’t want my quest for truth to be an accumulation of facts that leaves me dry, harsh, and uncompassionate.

That Which I’ve Experienced I Proclaim To You

I pray my encounters with God’s truth, with Jesus, leave me with a testimony like 1 John 1

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:1-3

My prayer is to walk away from God’s word having felt like I encountered this man I’ve read about. I want to walk away and speak about him as if I know him personally and intimately. That is my prayer for you too!
