I was listening to one of our pastors preach last Sunday and the following text from Genesis jumped out at me.

“4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” Genesis 3:4-6

I sat looking at the text because the conversation looked so familiar and I couldn’t figure out why. Then I realized it’s a conversation I’ve had many times.

“I shouldn’t do that”…
“Why can’t you?”…
“Because it doesn’t honor God”…
“But wouldn’t it would be good/fun/pleasing. This is why you are not happy. Don’t you want to be happy?”…..
“Well it would be fun, pleasing, satisfying”….
“Then do it”…

This my friends is how we justify sin even when we know it’s sin. Before this interaction Eve viewed this tree as something to avoid, but Eve allowed herself to be deceived to believe that this tree was good. The text says “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food….she took the food and ate”. That is exactly what we allow ourselves to do if we are not sober and vigilant, we can be deceived into believing what is wrong to actually be good and right.

Let me leave you with this thought. Just because you can make it sound good doesn’t make it right. Don’t be deceived brothers and sisters. Stay sober because you have an enemy.

Lord, I pray for my friends, that you would keep them from temptation. That your Spirit would strengthen them to know the truth and stand firm. Amen! Blessings
